Roman Signer

Wish I was in Houston to see this at Rice U's Video cubicle. 3 of his videos will be up till June 16th.

56 kleine Helikopter, 2008
Video from St Gallen in Switzerland where Signer filled a room with 56 small remote-controlled helicoptors and started them all at the same time. The helicoptors were left flying until their batteries ran out.

whitehot | April 2013: Jeffry Mitchell @ Henry Art Gallery

"Mitchell just wrapped up a retrospective, Like a Valentine, at University of Washington’s Henry Art Gallery, where marble halls were filled with twenty-five years’ worth of work in almost every medium imaginable. His oeuvre reflects his persona: positive, gregarious, Catholic, gay. The man has close-cut, snow-dappled hair, a gap-tooth smile, intoxicating blue eyes. The art he makes is equally intoxicating, trademarked by a pervasive, ejaculatory whiteness, frolicking, totemic
animals, and a sweetness darkly carnivalesque and sexual." READ MORE HERE...

Museums Confront the Skeletons in Their Closets
"For more than a century, the museum has exhibited assorted limbs, bones, tubercular lungs and fetuses, all in the name of science and enlightenment. Yet lately the curators are re-evaluating the principles that govern their displays as they confront a growing debate over what cultural organizations should be doing to preserve the dignity of the dead..."

Badge of Shame

A badge of shame, also a symbol of shame, mark of shame, or simply a stigma, is typically a distinctive symbol required to be worn by a specific group or an individual for the purpose of public humiliation, ostracism, or persecution. Under the Poor Law Act of 1697, paupers in receipt of parish relief were required to wear a badge of blue or red cloth on the shoulder of the right sleeve in an open and visible manner, in order to make life more humiliating for the poor. The yellow badge that Jews were required to wear in parts of Europe during the Middle Ages, and later in Nazi Germany and German-occupied Europe, was intended to be a badge of shame. The term may also refer to other identifying marks that are associated with shame. The biblical "Mark of Cain" can be interpreted as synonymous with a badge of shame. The term is also used metaphorically, especially in a pejorative sense, to characterize something associated with a person or group as shameful. via: wikapedia
